Until quite recently, the ability to AF with an f/8 lens/Extender combination required a 1D- or 1Ds-series camera body, which is why I bought them. Now, I can use a 7D Mark II camera to AF with my 400/5.6L and Extender 1.4x III. As already indicated in another posted reply, when such older cameras stop working, the options for repair are limited. Good enough for me for sure. 5D Mark III, actually. Pete Souza was using 5D Mark II for years before Obama took office. In an interview, he said he wanted to buy new 5D Mark II bodies when he returned to the White House, but the Mark II was out of production at that time.
The 5D Mark 1 still takes good pictures (in terms of Image quality) compared to today's cameras. The sensor is still pretty good at low ISO, and can hold its own compared to modern equivalents. That aspect of the camera actually holds up pretty well. However, the actual shooting experience wasn't great.
